Our Expertise

Creating Your Normal

Irrespective of your identity or life challenges, our goal is to collaborate with you in an exploration of these and to find solutions them. We make no assumptions about these challenges or issues, or their meaning or impact on you. We will use all of our experience, knowledge of psychological issues, and considerable therapeutic expertise to help and support you.

Coming Out

Coming out can be one of the most liberating moments of a person’s life. It can also be hugely destabilising for you and your loved ones, especially if it coincides with the break-up of a long-term relationship. DCC offers support for those dealing with coming out, the reactions from family and loved ones, and navigating a new life as your most authentic self.

Relationships

Non-traditional relationships are prone to the same relationship troubles as anyone else, plus added challenges and complications on top of those. DCC offers specialised relationship support for those in same-sex, cis-trans, and polyamorous relationships, both separately and together with your partner/s.

Secrecy and Shame

From a young age, LGBTQIA+ people are perceived as different without knowing why. This often teaches us to self-censor, to be less ourselves for fear of being further outcast. Our therapists work to help you identify these learned behaviours and the tools to curb them, building self-acceptance and resilience so you can live a fuller life as your most authentic self.

Self-Defeating Thinking/Behaviour

In response to feeling outcast and different, LGBTQIA+ people may engage in self-defeating thoughts and behaviours, which can include anything from substance abuse to self-harm. With our help, you can learn to manage not only these behaviours but the feelings that trigger them.

Children and Parenthood

Parenting is a hard job for anyone, one further complicated by non-traditional sexualities and relationships. At DCC, our experts work with parents-to-be, children of LGBTQIA+ couples who are having trouble accepting their family’s difference as well as with those questioning their own gender or sexuality. We offer support for members of the LGBTQIA+ community considering parenthood, as well as for parents raising LGBTQIA+ children and teens.

Sex Therapy

Our specialists in sex therapy are trained to deal with wide-ranging physical and emotional intimacy issues. We can share our expertise in sex therapy in a range of areas and also help you to address sexual anxiety and performance, sex-related pain, sexual shame, and erectile and performance challenges, among others. Some of our clients also want a safe therapeutic space to discuss fetishes, kink, BDSM, and compulsive sexual behaviours.

Addiction and Wellbeing

Research shows that alcohol and recreational drugs, and related behaviours and challenges, affect LGBTQIA+ people disproportionately to the broader population. We understand the complex relationship between well-being, psychological challenges, sexuality and addictions. From experimenting with substances, to chem-sex and/or unhealthy dependencies, our experience can help you to focus on your physical and mental well-being, and to prioritise your goals and needs.
