Increasingly, stress and worry are recognised to be important factors in the onset and also relapse of common skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema and acne. These conditions can of course generate significant stress and anxiety themselves. Psychodermatology is an innovative mind-body specialism that brings together advances in dermatology and insights into the close relationship between the skin and mental wellbeing.
About Psychodermatology
Psychodermatological therapy can help you manage the challenges and difficulties of living with a skin condition, for instance:
- Understanding and healing negative experiences around your skin (e.g. low self-esteem, limitations, criticism, bullying, medical trauma)
- Reducing compulsive scratching
- Living with visible difference
- Managing the toll of medications and treatment
- Overcoming skin-related difficulties in relationships (e.g. intimacy, fear of abandonment)
- Feeling understood; that your experience of living with a skin condition is heard in a non-judgemental space
At DCC, we have extensive expertise in psychodermatology and appearance-related psychological therapies, with published research in leading academic journals on psychodermatology (as well as a major textbook on the topic*), and experience working closely with many of London’s leading dermatologists, including at the Royal Free Hospital London.
*Psychological Approaches to Dermatology by L. Papadapalous and R. Bor
