Dr Tami Avis is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist. Tami has a wide range of experience both within the NHS, voluntary and private sector. Her experience in the NHS includes being part of the HIV psychology service at the Royal Free Hospital, which cultivated her interest in working with chronic illness. She has also worked extensively with substance addiction and misuse within an NHS drugs and alcohol service, both with groups and individuals.Tami’s work within a GP surgery has ensured that she is used to working within a short time framework, providing maximum interventions in minimum time. She has provided psychological counselling for a multitude of issues including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, relationship issues, anger management, sleep disorders, low self-confidence, obsessive compulsive disorder, work related problems, sexual issues, loss and bereavement and phobias. Her work with children and teenagers, both in a primary school setting and privately, has allowed Tami to use a wide range of skills, including play therapy. She is experienced in working with victims of trauma, including hostages, prisoners of war and victims of crime. Tami is used to working within a multicultural framework and with clients for whom English is not their first language. She understands the importance of tailoring therapy for an individual’s needs.
BPS accredited qualifications in both Level A and B psychometric testing allows Tami to use a range of psychometric instruments. This includes ability and aptitude testing and personality assessment, ideal for staff selection, promotion and career change, not to mention personal insight. Tami is an integrative practitioner, specialising in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. She is actively involved in research and has been a contributor to publications that are in press.
